A recent documentary discovery shows British military commitment to Portugal predates 1808
A recent crowd-funded purchase of an Order Book dated Lisbon 1798-1802, caused the discovery of a little-known British deployment of significant numbers of troops to Portugal from 1796-1802. Why were these troops there? Which troops were there? Who led them? What did they do during the 1801 War of the Oranges between Spain & Portugal? Were there further deployments between 1803-1808? How did these link to the Peninsular war which began in 1808? Were any officers on this earlier deployment used again in the Peninsular war? If you do not know the answer to these questions, then you might like to listen to Gareth Glover’s latest talk.
